I’m not feminist, but…
Feminism: The belief in the right of women to have political, social, and economic equality with men. (Wikipedia) According to this definition, how can people NOT BE feminist?
Well, it seams that most of us don’t believe in these rights:
- Women in South Africa walk the equivalent of 16 Earth/Moon back-and-forth a day in order to get the water their families need. (source: UNEP)
- Half of the girls in Africa will drop elementary school due to its unsatisfactory sanitary conditions, hence lack of bathrooms or water. (source: UNPD)
- Systematic rape was a prominent feature of the conflicts in Bosnia-Hergovina, DR Congo, East Timor and Haiti, and is ongoing in the Darfur region of Sudan. (source: BBC)
- In Canada, on average, women still make only 70% what men make, even when employed full-time, year-round. (source: Statistic Canada in NDP)
I think being feminist is to be hurt, as a woman or a man, when you think about this pain and all the potential that will never bloom because of someone’s gender. It’s to shake your head when a girl gets involved in gangs to get some “love” and “protection”. It’s to be proud when women get involved in influential fields strongly dominated by men. It’s to feel angry when a government doesn’t recognize the right for women to fight for equality in the workplace.
Here’s something for you. And for the geeks among us, he is the stickiness deconstruction of the video.:
Do you believe in the Girl Effect? What would be the girl effect necessary where you live? What is the place of social entrepreneurship and social media in the equality and justice for women?

Question: What are the best ways to leverage community expertise?
That’s basically what we are doing with this blog. Like we mentioned in a previous post, we are surrounded by great mentors and friends, who’s opinion in priceless to us. We use Twitter, we will use Facebook soon: any other ideas to get people involved and thrilled about our project?

Question: Who does a great job at educating people online?
Many websites promote online learning and knowledge sharing, which is great since it contributes to what we believe: that human beings are entitled to educate themselves.
Still, we don’t want to address a need that would be already addressed, or, in other words, jump into a market that is already saturated. Which websites already do a great job at educating people? Any of them promote offline encounters?

Question : For-profit vs non-profit?
Our mission is clear : to expend the learning opportunities for all by connecting people with similar interests and by empowering people to reclaim their own education (and if the mission is actually not that clear, please comment on it !) This is obviously a social mission, and we believe deeply in the power of social entrepreneurship to change the world.
We have an efficient monetizing model, and we wonder: would our mission be best served by a for-profit model (based on social entrepreneurship) or a non-profit one? Why would you choose one over the other?

Walking our talk
E-180 is based on the belief that education doesn’t belong to institutions: that education is a relationship allowing growth and development. We built this blog to walk our talk and to allow you to share your advices and criticisms with us, as we are working on the development of a platform that is meant to address your needs of consensual education.
We deeply believe in the incredible support of the community, and we are already grateful for all your time and commitment to keeping us on track! Now that Catherine is working hard, in collaboration with Ekorce, to develop our brand (don’t worry: the real logo will look way better than this one!!), that Dominic is fine tuning our Facebook App and that Christine has moved to a full-time position as the CEO of E-180, we are ready to shift speed.
The purpose of this blog is simple: to keep you posted on what’s up, and to ask your opinion. We have so many questions, and we know you have even more suggestions. So please, share your thoughts on everything you find on this blog: our mission, our bios, our ideas, our questions, our challenges, our successes.
We will also add a page where you can post your needs in terms of knowledge-sharing: it’s not the great platform we are building for you yet, but it’s a beginning!
