Cutting education
February 9, 2009
I just received this alert from my friend John Merrow, founder of Learning Matters, leading organization in reporting on education in United States. Don’t miss the Newshour tonight!
Friends,
Our public schools are in trouble: Job losses, home losses, and declining tax revenue all spell trouble. In this recession, nearly every state has less to spend on education. School districts, now working on next year’s budget, are planning deep cuts.
President Obama’s stimulus package had offered hope to schools: $79 billion in state aid, much of it intended to prevent teacher layoffs and cuts to programs. The Senate’s version, however, cuts $40 billion of that (and took another $16 billion from school construction funds) before sending the bill back to the House. A deal will be hammered out this week.
Just how much is at stake for public schools? Find out tonight on The NewsHour as we visit Peekskill, NY-one of many small cities across the country where the recession is having a devastating impact on education.
Tune in to The NewsHour tonight to watch. And stay tuned for related podcasts.
Congratulations to John Merrow and all the Learning Matters’ team for their groundbreaking work on education.
As Anderson Cooper would say on CNN: “Keeping them honest”.

Education in the US is just abysmal. I recently posted some thoughts on this topic, contrasting the system/drive here and in Asia.
